Montreal, October 4, 2022 – From September 28 to 30, 2022, the International Federation of Coalitions for Cultural Diversity (IFCCD) took part in MONDIACULT 2022, UNESCO’s World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development, at which 150 States adopted a historic declaration for culture. This declaration, which recognizes culture as a global public good, echoes several demands put forward by the Federation, notably calling for the “integration of culture ‘as a specific objective in its own right’ in the next United Nations Sustainable Development Goals” and for “substantial regulation of the digital sector, in particular large platforms, for the benefit of online cultural diversity, artists’ intellectual property and fair access to content for all.”

In the many parallel and official events in which it took part, the Federation brought messages on the need to recognize the importance of culture in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, on the conditions necessary to achieve “fair culture” and on the need to involve all players, including private companies, in order to preserve the diversity of cultural expressions in the digital environment.

“Diversity of cultural expressions can only thrive in a sustainable development context, where strong regional cultural ecosystems, strengthening the local value chain, exist. Such ecosystems allow cultural content to be produced and consumed locally first, while assuring creators and producers fair remuneration and work conditions and giving citizens access to the culture that belongs to them. To achieve this, we need to address the severe inequalities existing for our partners coalitions in regions beyond Europe and North America.”, said the Secretary General of the Federation, Marie-Julie Desrochers, as part of the event A cultural goal is essential for our common future organized by the Culturegoal2030 campaign at the Colegio San Ildefonso on September 27.

“Why was the cultural sector hurt so much by the pandemic? Because it is still an informal sector. Every artist, every cultural professional, must have the same rights as any other professional, all over the world. We must act now.”, said the President of the Federation, Beat Santschi, during a speech as part of the official program.
