As the 2005 UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions nears its 20th anniversary in 2025, the IFCCD underscores the vital role of civil society in its implementation by launching a promotional video available in English, French and Spanish.

The video highlights the importance of the Convention and the pivotal role of civil society in supporting cultural sectors worldwide. It emphasizes and reminds us  of culture’s deep intrinsic value, far beyond its economic weight. Culture embodies identities, values, and meaning, acting as a crucial catalyst for dialogue, social justice, and democracy, while also celebrating the richness of linguistic diversity.

The video strives to mobilize cultural sectors globally, recognizing their vital role in realizing the Convention’s full potential in countries around the world. Every stakeholder in the cultural sector is vital in preserving the diversity of cultural expressions, preventing homogenization, and improving the socio-economic conditions of artists. In every country, bringing the cultural community together as a coalition and fostering a strong, unified voice are vital for shaping legislation and driving impactful cultural policies.

It is worth noting that UNESCO’s 2005 Convention (Article 11) mandates that ratifying states must encourage “the active participation of civil society in their efforts to achieve the objectives of the […] Convention.

As Guillaume Prieur, President of the IFCCD and Coordinator of the French Coalition for Cultural Diversity stated, “The 20th anniversary of UNESCO’s 2005 Convention presents a unique opportunity to reaffirm civil society’s commitment to cultural diversity. Together, we have the power to shape cultural policies and ensure a rich and diverse future for our cultural expressions.”
